Smash Up is the latest entry by the Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG), makers of the game Thunderstone. It's an easy to learn, card-based game for the distinguished thinker. The type of people who like to spend their time pondering the deeper questions of life, such as 'If Wizards teamed up with Aliens, could they defeat an army of Ninjas and laser wielding Dinosaurs?'

On the front of the box, AEG touts Smash Up as "The shufflebuilding game of total awesomeness." With such a fun premise, it's difficult to argue the point. The game is essentially an all out brawl between 2-4 players, wielding teams of eight different factions. There are the previously mentioned Wizards, Ninjas, Aliens and Dinosaurs, as well as Pirates, Zombies, Robots and Tricksters (leprechauns, gnomes and the like). Every faction has a unique 20 card deck, each with their own varying abilities. Each player chooses two factions and shuffles them together into one forty card deck. The concept of smashing two decks together not only serves as inspiration for its name, but also gives Smash Up a lot of different card combinations to explore, keeping things interesting.

There are three types of cards. The first type is Bases, and these are kept separate from the faction decks. When the game begins four Bases are revealed, forming the battlefield the players will be contending over. The other two types, Actions and Minions are what make up the faction decks. Every turn each player may play one Action and one Minion in any order, and then draw two replacement cards to end their turn.

There are a few downsides to the game. For one, a lack of any score cards or other methods to track victory points forces players to use pen and paper. Not a deal breaker, but it would have been a small thing to include. As one may expect in a game of this type, there are a few minor balance issues, with some pairings seemingly stronger than others. While all the combinations are valid, someone playing the numerous smaller minions in a Robot/Alien smash up may have a tough time countering the big minions and catastrophic capabilities of a Pirate/Dinosaur team. Perhaps the biggest drawback, and this is dependent on the people you play with, is the resentment factor. A lot of the Actions and Minion abilities in the game revolve around destroying other players' minions and actions. This can lead to a kind of perpetual "screw your buddy" type scenario, which can leave a bad taste in some people's mouths. You know the people you play with, and the one that feels constantly picked on and teamed up against? Yeah, Smash Up probably won't be their favorite game.

There are a wide variety of Action cards, with many different results, such as extra Actions, destroying another player's Minion, or moving Minions from one base to another to name a few. Minion cards have varying power levels, and are played directly on Bases. Each Base has a breaking point, and when the power level of all the minions on a particular Base meet or exceed that breaking point, that Base is scored and replaced with another. Scoring is based on the cumulative power levels of a player's Minions camped there, so a player with one 7 point Dinosaur will get more points that the player with three 2 point Zombies. When the first player to reach 15 victory points ends his turn, the game is over.

Win or lose however, the game manages to retain player interest with all the different faction interactions and dynamics to explore. Would the brute strength of the Dinosaurs be better paired with the stealth and subterfuge of the Ninjas, or the wide array of bonus actions the Wizard receive? What will best compliment the Zombies' actions that let them play minions from the discard pile. Finding what works for you and your play style is a large portion of the joy you'll get out of Smash Up.

And as long as the people you game with have a good sense of humor, that joy is easy to discover.

Suddenly, I'm observing an increasingly chaotic battlefield from a spot just above and behind a single wheeled machinegun. Slap-bang in the center of the screen is a crosshair. Left mouse button depressed, I drag this reticule along a line of charging spearmen. Targets are knocked off their feet, flicked like puppets into unnatural poses, sent twirling to the turf. When the smoke clears, an entire enemy unit has been blown away.

Directly controllable artillery isn't Fall of the Samurai's most significant feature, but it's probably its most irresistible and surprising. Nailing far-off commanders is deliberately difficult through. The camera accompanies larger projectiles, but there's no sniper style zoom view. While there'll be occasions in FotS when you get to mow down of samurai with machine guns, Creative Assembly is too serious about their history for it to be a regular occurrence. Despite the cinematic Last Samurai overtones, the game's primary focus is the Boshin War (1868-1869) rather than the ill-fated Satsuma Rebellion (1877) that inspired much of the 2003 Tom cruise movie.

Both sides in this low-key civil war were enthusiastic modernizers, eager to lay their hands on the latest Western military tech and strategy. In other tweak, clicking the "end turn" button now advances your campaign a mere two weeks. With winters now lasting six turns, ponderous or ill-timed invasions will be costlier than ever.

Naval blazing

Longer cold snaps aren't the only new feature the humble Total War grunt has to worry about. Now the poor fools who do all the heavy trigger-pulling and sword-slashing can be slain between battles by naval bombardment. Select a friendly fleet on the campaign map and a range circle appears. Any army within this zone-o'-death may be pummeled without risk. You won't devastate targets, but hounding an invasion force as it trudges down a long coastal road could become the difference between victory and defeat in later battle.

Mark this moment. In Fall of the Samurai, Total War navies finally go from being mere amusing distractions to indispensable strategic tools. That bombardment ability can also be used to clobber cities, neutralize coastal batteries (a new buildable structure) and turn the tide in normal ground battles.

Secret servants

Unsurprisingly, given the 300-year period shift, most of the cast and rabble-rousers don't come direct from Shogun 2. Working alongside familiar Shinobi (ninjas) and Geisha are two faction-specific secret policemen-the Ishen-Shishi (Imperialist) and the massively useful Foreign Veteran.

Remember the nasty Colonel Bagley in The Samurai? That's the kind of calculating, conscience-free merc you get when you employ a foreign veteran. With one of these embedded in an army, your troops will move, reload and gain experience faster.

On Jan 25th we will have 3 new fire attribute decks to test against the meta. They are the Fire King monsters, Fire Fist archetype, and Haze Beast archetype. In this article I will be covering the Fire Fist or known in the OCG as Fire Star monsters. The deck itself is a whole new concept to the game. All the monsters in the fire star deck have effects where they can set spell and trap cards directly from the deck to the field. Something that has never been done yet in Yu-Gi-Oh. Now how is this deck gonna weigh against Wind-ups, Hieratics, Inzektors, Chaos Dragons and Dino Rabbit.

First Match-up is Dino Rabbit vs Fire Fist. This game was pretty frustrating. I went first in this round and I felt like the entire game was a constant struggle. Negating left and right, so annoying, Laggia beat the hell out of me so much while testing. Fire Fists are powerless against Dino Rabbit unless your opponent has a killer hand or you have a mean side deck. Dino Rabbit has the clear advantage.

Second match-up was Fire Fist vs Hieratics. I didn't spend too much time on this one because I felt that fire fists had a clear advantage. As long as you stop them from going off during the first turn you are guaranteed the win. These monsters rule the Damage Step, Hieratics set up for a big OTK and if they cant get over 1 of your monsters you pretty much have the game sown.

Now this match-up was hard to place a clear winner which was surprising because I thought Wind-ups would be clearly on top. Wind-ups won most of the games I played but at the same time I could help but shake the fact that Fire Fists were better. As soon as I sided mind crushes I dominated Wind-ups. As soon as they activate Wind-up shark's eff I crushed it and stopped them from going off. So I feel to come to a clear conclusion would take more time and testing. For now though I place Wind-ups on top.

Next up is Inzektors. Now this deck murders Fire Fists, so badly. It wasn't even funny. Fire Stars main tactic is setting cards from the deck, which gives Inzektors so many targets to pop with hornet. The best strategy to get a win against Inzektors would be deal as much damage as possible before you see the hornet and dragonfly because once they get started they will destroy targets all day. Once you've done as much damage that you can go Shock master and hope for the best lol. From there, there's plenty of side deck options that you can go into to beat the deck. More than likely though, you will lose that first round against a good Inzektor player.

Last match up of my deck testing was Chaos Dragons. This is almost an even match up but I gave it to the Fire Fists in the end. They have the power of Chaos Dragons easily. The main focus of chaos dragons is milling from deck to get lights and dark targets and over powering all of your opponents monsters. With Fire Fist monsters owning in the damage step it pretty much gets over everything that Chaos Dragons can put out. It's really impressive seeing a monster with a base attack of 1800 kill a big beater like Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon.

So basically it's still pretty clear that Fire Fists will fight to be tier one come Jan 25th when it hits the TCG. I'm looking forward to seeing what creative decks TCG players come up with with the Fire Fist archetype. Here is the deck list I used to play test the deck, it's an OCG stun version of the deck.
